Plate Sizes Guide: Paper, Sugarcane and Compartment Plates

Disposable plates are sized by their width in inches. A 7" plate (about 18cm) is a side or dessert plate, a 9" plate (about 23cm) suits sandwiches and light meals, and a 10" plate (about 25cm) is a full dinner plate. Compartment plates keep a whole meal separate. Here's every plate we stock, from white paper plates and sugarcane plates to heavy duty compartment plates, with sizes and packs.

Which plate do I need?

• Cakes, desserts and snacks: 7" paper or sugarcane plates
• Sandwiches, light meals and buffets: 9" white paper plates
• Dinner plates for main meals and barbecues: 10" sugarcane paper plates
• Mains with sides or sauces: 9" or 10" 3 compartment plates
• Thalis, curries and full meals at weddings and festivals: 5, 6 or 7 compartment plates
• Hot, saucy or heavy food: sugarcane plates, which stay strong and resist oil and water

Paper, sugarcane or heavy duty plastic plates?

White paper plates are the lowest-cost choice for dry and light food such as cake, sandwiches and snacks. Sugarcane plates (also sold as bagasse or fibre plates) are made from the natural fibre left after sugarcane is pressed. They're thicker and stronger than ordinary paper plates, so they suit hot meals, curries and gravies, and they're biodegradable, plastic-free and foam-free. Our heavy duty plastic plates are thick, sturdy and reusable: wash them and use them again, which makes them good value for parties, regular events and large gatherings.

Compartment plates: 3, 5, 6 and 7 sections

Round 3 compartment plates (9" or 10") have one large section for the main and two smaller ones for sides. Rectangular 5, 6 and 7 compartment plates are about 29 x 21cm, the size of a thali tray, with room for rice, curries, breads, salad and dessert on one plate. The 6 compartment sugarcane plate comes 1" deep for lighter meals or 2" deep for saucy dishes.
